Join palaeontologist Dr Liam Herringshaw on this Expert Geology Walk as we follow the ‘Stoupe Loop’ out of Ravenscar to explore the 200 million-year history of North Yorkshire. Starting at the National Trust Visitor Centre at 10:30 am in Ravenscar, we will yomp down across the golf course to Peak Steel, admire glorious views across Robin Hoods Bay, then clamber down to hunt quake stones (the Peak Fault), snakestones (ammonites) and golden spikes (a Jurassic global boundary) in the shoreline rocks.
Taking care not to disturb the seals, we’ll meander along the beach towards Stoupe Beck, walking across Jurassic sea floors and looking for evidence of the creatures that lived there and the environments they lived in. As we approach Stoupe Beck, we’ll find things turning icy thanks to some 20,000-year-old glaciers (don't worry, they've melted), before we ascend to Stoupe Brow. That will lead us to the Cinder Track of the old Scarborough & Whitby Railway, where we’ll find the historic quarries that really took the p*ss (by stealing the Pope’s robes!), before returning to Ravenscar, the town that never was. There’s so much to cram in that five hours really isn’t enough!
You will need stout footwear and a packed lunch/refreshments and sensible clothing . Due to the number of seals at Ravenscar we ask that dogs do not come on this trip. This trip is only suitable for people over 16years old and includes a strenuous climb.
Due to COVID19 restrictions we are limiting this walk to adults only and numbers will be capped at 5 people. we will relax this in the future to allow families and children to attend.
Meet: Outside the National Trust Visitor Centre at Ravenscar. There is free parking on the roadside but please be considerate to residents.
