Our Hidden Geology walk will take you into the eye of some Jurassic storms as we stroll the seafloors of ancient Staithes.
Starting in the harbour, we'll see the steep sandstone cliffs telling tales of serious storms, and the sea-life that thrived in the lulls. As the tide falls, we’ll head up over the breakwater and round onto Penny Steel and Jet Wyke, to hunt belemnites, bivalves and burrows, as the Staithes sandstones give way to the Cleveland ironstones. At Old Nab, we’ll find some amazing evidence of mining, both fairly recent and very ancient, and plenty more fossils. We'll then return to Staithes, hoping some midsummer sun will light up a few more treasures on the way back.
We will meet at the information centre in the Staithes clifftop car park at 10:30am, returning to Staithes Harbour by 3pm. You will need a packed lunch, drinks and sensible footwear/clothing. If you have a hard hat please bring it, otherwise we will supply you with one.
